Heres the original article at www.parkflyers.org.nz

and I have re-printed it below

Not so long ago I bought an IYF off Mat from KiwiRC (matwelli on the forum). I took up his free build offer because my building skills are abysmal. Mat has put up the build process over here for those who are interested. Click Here.

Being quite new to wings, and just getting back into the hobby I had a lot of questions. A quick check of Gmail shows we have exchanged 88 emails since the beginning of May. Mat has always answered all of my questions quickly and he’s given me a lot of advice which I am really grateful for.

Onto the wing itself; it arrived via courier in a massive box, carefully packaged. I had been following the build process here on the forums, but the first thought I had was how big the wing is. Mat kindly loaned me his gear: an AR500, MD 2900kv motor, 40/50Amp ESC and BEC so I didn’t have to wait for the slow boat from China/and the US for my MD motor. After binding my TX to the AR500 and following the TX instructions Mat put up in the build thread I went down to LEP.

It was pretty windy that day, maybe 15 km/h and a bit gusty. I probably wouldn’t have got out the Parkzone planes in that wind, but Mat’s emails had promised exceptional wind performance, after all flying on windy days was the whole point =). So after doing the pre-flight, I hit the throttle and launched the wing into the air. The scream of the MD motor with the 6×4 prop pierced the silence at LEP. I didn’t even notice the wind at all, flying was a breeze. The wing really can move, much faster than the T28 or Corsair and real quick it was nearly down to a dot. Quickly I brought her back around and attempted a landing. On the final turn before approach I gave too much elevator and stalled leading to a spiral into the dirt. Most of the way across the fields, the IYF was on the grass and nobody could have been the wiser. I was expecting at least a wingtip to have broken off, but no. Everything was pristine, bar some mud on the underside. Thus ended the IYF maiden.

Since then I have had about 15 flights and am impressed with the capabilities of the wing. I have put in my own gear bar the motor as mine is on its way. The IYF is really tough, goes fast and can slow down well (when you don’t give full elevator with no throttle). Now I can fly slowly around the park marginally faster than my floaty Corsair or much much faster if I engage the MD. =)

Really happy with everything, and Mat has been a great help.
The servos have been replaced (one failed on Jacko).
Motor test run, amps are down a bit on max, mid 30′s on the 6 by 4, this motor is designed to run a 7 by 4.

Lets set the scene.
Last of the rain has just finished, it started at 9:30 am, its now 10:45 am.
Bit of a breeze
Friggin cold
The sky on one side is black, hard to see and the landing aproach is filled with the sun, perfect.

Mikey B is with me, launch here, she rolls left and climbs, do a few circuits, trimming, trimming, woohoo shes flying level.

My throws on low rates are still heaps, I find i am moving the stick 5mm from centre = 1mm at the elevons ! for normal flying.

1/2 throttle only, cant see this thing head on with the bad light, suprisingly the yellow/black bottom is just black, the silver/red top also looks black – perfect.

Punch full noise and point straight up, 399 feet or so, chop throttle and do a couple of power of circuits, after diving 200 ft……man this thing is fast, power off she would keep up with the lightning 48 ! (well almost )

Time for landing, fly out to the right…..fly into the sun !!!…call out to mike “cant see it”, “neither can I ” he replys, just hold on untill she is in view 2 seconds later…..swing her around for the aproach, to high, too fast , power back on and climb……..OK lets not do that again we decide on a cross wind landing so as not to fly past the sun sgain.

Comming in from the left, 150 ft up or so, maybe 500 ft out chop throttle…….too fast, come around again…..this time chop throttle before final aproach and grease her in, land on the strip, covered in mud from the worm holes

loved every second of the 4 minute flight, dident get to relax at all – show this one alot of respect.

Many thanks go to Jacko for building such a sweet wing, and thanks to Mikey B for standing by with calming words, spotting aircraft etc (we fly with Full size planes)

Ritewing hints and tips #1

1 – Put everything forward!!, if powered pusher, use the lightest motor for the job – It means less nose weight & less AUW

2 – Dont worry about goop/CA for the coro bay lids, scorch the edge of the coro where it meets the EPP with a lighter and use hotglue! It works perfectly, bonds quick and the heat helps to soften the coro and prevent sticky uppy bits. Use round corners on the coro, a 50c coin works well as a guide. It helps reduce sticky uppy bits!

3 – Dont 3M90 the wing in direct sunlight – It tacks up really quick. Do it in the shade.

4 – Dont be afraid of the 3M90! While doing most of the wing, have the nozzle on high. Turn it down when you wrap the riteweave up around the trailing edge.

5 – On your first ritewing, first peice of riteweave, glass the trailing edge section of the wing in between the control rods – Its nice and flat, and a short length. You’ll get a feel for it quickly. Dont try to do lay down huge lengths quickly.

6 – Only spread the 3m90 when it wet. Trying to spread it when its tacky can make uglies – see below. Dont be afraid of the 3m90, if the piece of weave you just laid down looks like it needs more – Spray more.

7 – Dont be afraid of the 3m90

8 – 3m90 tacks up in a few minutes, but takes a few days to properly dry. Aim for 4-5 days of drying in the wing beds. You can feel the solvents evaporate out of the wing and cool it down. Freaky!

9 – Do the top side of the wing, leave it to tack up well for a few hours, then lay down greaseproof paper in the wing beds (with holes cut in the beds to allow for your control rods) and glass the underside. leave it for an hour or so to tack up before doing the leading and trailing edges.

10 – Trim the riteweave on both side of the LE roughly 1/4″ back from the apex of the LE, Trim the upper TE riteweave flush with the EPP. Leave 3/4 of an inch of riteweave extending on the lower TE of the wing. Run on length of riteweave down each half of the wings LE, Stick one half down evenly and leave it to tack for a minute, and then work and stick it down around the LE and too the lower surface. Spray the TE riteweave overhang and the TE of the wing with 3m90 and give it a minute to get tacky, Work the weave up stick it to the trailing edge, and over and onto the upper surface. Hit it with the 3m90 again and smooth it all out. Now throw it in the wing bed with the weights and baking paper and leave it for a few days.

11 – Wipe down you squeegy often, scrape of the excess 3m90 before it goes tacky on the squeegy, or it’ll try to stick to your wing.

12 – Try not to touch the wing while glassing it, your fingers are likely covered in 3m90 now and will like to stick to the wing.

13 – If you do have any ugly 3m90 balls or pools or whatever, dont worry about it. Once its dried for a few days you can clean them up with a knife easily, trying to clean them up before its fully dry is messy and much harder too do.
